From forklift driver to head of logistics

I am the Head of Logistics. My role is to manage the logistics department. This involves checking, picking and securing the goods ordered by customers, checking the documentation for goods dispatched, and checking stock levels.

Every day is different and brings new challenges.

What challenges does your job involve?

  • Stress, because everything has its deadlines and its own timeframe for completion
  • Implementing new projects in the field of logistics
  • Discovering and learning about new developments in logistics
  • Great people from different companies whom we work with
  • Close collaboration with the various departments at S&S

I’ve been with Schulz & Sohn since 2015 and started as a forklift driver. I didn’t speak any German. My first words here were: ‘I’d be happy to do that’. But I met a brilliant team who taught me everything. Over time, I took a language course and then another (I still have problems with the language sometimes), and then I was given the chance to take over the logistics department as team leader. And after completing my training, I became head of the logistics department.

For me, it was a tough journey involving a lot of sacrifices. It was also a very stressful time; I kept wondering whether I’d make it. But these days it’s very rare to be given this sort of opportunity, and I’d be a ‘fool’ not to make the most of it.

What opportunities do you see for yourself here?

In the future, I’d like to develop my career further in the field of logistics. I’d like to pursue further education and eventually be able to hang my Master’s degree on the wall. I know I still have a long way to go, including when it comes to language skills.
