Climate action often begins where you least expect it: Why peatlands deserve our attention

How can we bring sustainability to life in our day-to-day working lives? We explore this question every month in our SDG Labs. In June, the focus was on United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 13: ‘Climate action’.

Alongside initiatives centred on species diversity and biodiversity, we also wanted to offer new perspectives on climate action to our staff. That’s why we organised a keynote talk in collaboration with Mission to Marsh. Our aim: to draw attention to a topic that is often underestimated yet plays a crucial role in our future.

Highlighting the bog as one of the most important natural climate protectors was a new insight for many, which made Mission to Marsh’s presentation so fascinating.

Wetlands store enormous amounts of CO₂, provide a vital habitat for numerous animal and plant species, filter water and help to mitigate both flooding and droughts. Their protection is therefore a key element in the fight against climate change.

We were particularly impressed by how vividly and clearly Mission to Marsh conveyed the importance of these unique ecosystems. The talk demonstrated once again that we must take a holistic approach to climate protection. Alongside major political and technological solutions, many issues often receive little attention in everyday life, yet can still make a significant contribution.

With our SDG Labs, we aim to generate precisely this kind of momentum. They invite participants to discover new connections, share knowledge and consider sustainability from different perspectives. Because we are convinced that if people understand why something is important, they can act more consciously.

A heartfelt thank-you goes to Mission to Marsh for the inspiring insights and the fascinating discussion. Together, we want to help bring sustainability to life and inspire people to engage with issues that will shape our future in a sustainable way.
