Interview with our new apprentice René

Hello René, please introduce yourself briefly.
My name is René Bitner, I’m 18 years old and live in Ratingen. In my free time, I like to go to the football stadium or go on bike tours without a fixed plan or destination. I’ve been training as a warehouse logistics specialist at Schulz & Sohn since August 2024.

What motivated you to start an apprenticeship in logistics?
I enjoyed my two-month internship from March to May. I was able to gather a lot of impressions and get a good idea of what to expect in my future.

What does a typical working day look like during your training?
At the moment, I’m responsible for incoming and outgoing goods. I load and unload lorries there. I drive a forklift truck most of the day to complete my tasks.

Which departments have you already worked in during your apprenticeship, and which tasks did you particularly enjoy?
I have already been able to look around almost all departments. I particularly liked the development department and the HR department.

What skills or knowledge do you think are particularly important for a career in logistics?
In my view, the ability to work in a team, accuracy and a good sense of humour are particularly essential. My greatest sense of achievement was passing my forklift licence.

What company values have you particularly noticed during your apprenticeship, and how do they influence your day-to-day work?
I think Schulz & Sohn has a very informal relationship with its employees. This is also reflected by many of my colleagues.

How do you feel about working with the other trainees and colleagues in the company? Are there regular meetings or events that encourage dialogue?
I get on well with most of my colleagues and work well with them. I found the regular events, such as rowing or the summer party, very beneficial. Furthermore, I often got to talk to people there who I otherwise rarely see or haven’t had the opportunity to chat with before.

How do you envisage your professional future after your apprenticeship? Are there certain areas within logistics in which you would like to specialize?
I can’t think of any specific areas yet, but I want to do my master’s degree after a few years. Until then, I want to continue my education as much as possible.

Thank you, René, for the interview!
