From forklift driver to head of logistics

What is your job title and what is your job about?

I am the head of logistics. My job is to manage the logistics department. Checking, picking and securing goods ordered by customers. Checking the documentation of the shipped goods. Checking the stock levels.

What is the coolest thing about your job?

Every day is different and offers new challenges.

What challenges does your job bring?

  • Stress, since everything has its deadlines and its time for realisation
  • Carrying out new projects in the field of logistics
  • Discovering/learning about new logistics developments
  • Great people from different companies we work with
  • Close cooperation with the different departments of S&S

What does your career look like?

I have been with Schulz & Sohn since 2015 and started as a forklift driver. I didn’t know any German. My first words here were, “I like doing this”. But I met a great team who taught me everything. Over time, I did a language course and another one (I still have problems with the language sometimes), then I got the chance to take over the logistics department as team leader. And after finishing the training, I became the head of the logistics department.
It was a hard route for me, with a lot of hardships. It was also a very stressful time, I was preoccupied with the question of whether I would make it. But it’s very rare these days to get that chance and I would be a “fool” if I didn’t take it.

What opportunities do you see for yourself here?

In the future, I would like to develop further in the logistics sector. I would like to do higher education and be able to hang my Master’s degree on the wall at the end. I know that I still have a long way to go, also in terms of language. But I appreciate the opportunity and I want to show that it was a good investment.

What is special about Schulz & Sohn for you?

I have never been a “number” here. I really liked it when the boss came and shook my hand and asked, “How are you?”. Maybe it’s silly, but I used to work in much bigger companies where everyone had their own number and was called as such. If a mistake occurs during work, it’s not “your problem”. And if someone really has a problem, you discuss it with the supervisor and then look for a solution. I also like working with some of the heads of department because you can usually rely on their help.

What achievements do you find remarkable?

I think Schulz & Sohn offers plenty of opportunities for development and training. The company also offers a thirteenth salary. There is also the possibility to rent an e-bike. A fruit basket, free coffee or drinks are available. These are just little things, but from experience I can say that this is not a self-evident fact.

Does Schulz & Sohn suit you? If so, why?

Yes, I like it very much, all the things I already said, the help I got here as a foreigner, the development opportunities, what the company offers its employees, all that makes the company a rarity nowadays. If you work well and are honest, you can be sure to work here for a long time.

How would you describe Schulz & Sohn in one sentence?

The needle in the haystack!
